Tip Tuesday: Casual Engagement Photos

Now that fall is finally here, many couples are taking advantage of the cooler weather and scheduling engagement photos. While some brides use engagement photos as a chance to dress up, others prefer to keep it casual. For the brides who want their photos to have a more relaxed feel, I'm sharing my top tips for coordinating outfits and selecting a look that you and your fiancé (and your photographer) are sure to love.

Tips for Taking Casual Engagement Photos:

  • Be you: Wear something that makes you feel like yourself. You want to look back on your photos and recognize yourself, literally. Stick to makeup, clothes, and accessories that showcase your personal day-to-day style.

  • Don't match! To keep your look more casual, avoid matching. Find colors or pieces that complement each other, but avoid looking overly coordinated.

  • Do something different: Not into the traditional sweater, jeans, or casual dress look? Pick something that's special to you as a couple, like jerseys for your favorite sports team or a t-shirt that symbolizes where you met. Think outside the box to make your photos uniquely yours!

  • Avoid trendy pieces. Go for looks that are classic, rather than trendy. Trendy pieces can make your photos look dated, especially if the trend passes quickly.

  • Consider your location: Find a location that's conducive to the casual vibe you're going for. Are you looking for a picturesque fall background, cozy cafe, or even something more simple like an at-home photo shoot? Make sure to keep your end-result in mind as you're scouting locations.

  • Go for comfort: Make sure you select a look that feels comfortable. Wear shoes you're used to walking in and soft fabrics that fit well and aren't too big or small.

  • Simple accessories: Avoid choosing jewelry that could blend into your clothes. Many times pieces that look great in person don't translate well into photos, so make sure you pick simple, complimentary accessories.

  • Give it a test run: Make sure you give your outfit at least 1 test run. You want to make sure that if you've bought something new, it isn't itchy or doesn't ride up when you move around.

  • Skip small patterns: Avoid small patterns. They don't show up as well on camera. If you want to go with a printed look, make sure the pattern is big, bold, and compliments your background so it won't get lost in the photo.

Get the Look:

What's a more traditional fall look than an oversized sweater, pair of jeans, and super cute booties? I've been practically living in this outfit, and would be my go-to if we were to take engagement photos again. My Free People cream pullover is still in stock from Revolve, The Buckle, Zappos, and directly from Free People. Check out a few of my favorite cream sweaters for a classic, casual look:

Complete the Look:

Slip on a pair of great booties, accessorize with some simple earrings, and top it of with the perfect fall accessory, a rancher hat!
